    Caring for your jewellery

Jewellery storage image of 18k yellow, white and rose gold with diamonds and mixed gemstones in jewellery case for advice on how to care for jewellery from professional jewellers

We are often get asked by clients how to maintain the beauty of their jewellery.
We recommend getting our professional staff to check your jewellery that you wear on a daily basis at the following intervals. Rings are often subjected to the most wear and tear and hence the settings of the stones might wear down or loosen with time. These need to be checked annually. All other jewellery can be checked when you feel there is a need for it, perhaps with an interval of a few years at the time.

All of our jewellery cases are a great way to care for your jewellery and are anti tarnish. View our range of jewellery cases we offer below.

The most important task that should be repeated often is the care and cleaning of jewellery. Dirt can accumulate around the items make the metal surfaces dull and the gemstones loose their brightness. Diamonds attract grease to them, which is why diamond rings that are worn daily should be cleaned once a week. You should wash all other jewellery in daily use approximately once a month. Washing is simple. A soft children’s toothbrush or an equivalent small brush and a gentle washing up liquid is ideal for cleaning jewellery. It is worth using a bowl or at least use a sink with a plug whilst washing jewellery; otherwise small parts and possibly loose stones might go down the drain. All jewellery is placed in warm water with washing up liquid for a couple of minutes. All cavities and the base of the stones are brushed clean. After this the jewellery is rinsed with plenty of water and dried gently with a towel. You can actually dry most pieces on top of a towel with a hair dryer on a warm setting.Gold and silver items may oxidize and turn dark with time, we sell specialized cloths and dips for cleaning these items.

We are also happy to clean these if you pop in and see us. Some gemstones are sensitive and therefore you need to clean them with great caution. Porous gemstones such as emeralds, turquoises, corals, pearls and opals are very sensitive. You should clean pearl jewellery with the utmost care. It is actually best to allow professionals to take care of cleaning these items. Pearls should be re-strung once a year, depending on how much they have been worn. As we restring your pearls we are also able to professionally clean them. Antique jewellery may be particularly fragile so you may need these to be professionally cleaned.
