How to Care for your Jewellery & Diamond Rings

How to care for your Diamond ring

    General tips on diamond care:

Diamonds may be the hardest substance on earth, but they are not indestructible and can be scratched or cracked. Diamonds can be cut or polished only by another diamond, a hard blow can cause them to chip. Never wear your diamond jewellery when doing rough work, for example heavy gardening.

How to keep your diamond clean & sparkly:

Clean your diamond ring regularly! A simple plan to keep your diamond jewellery always looking beautiful is to clean your diamond at least once per week. I recommend a gentle cleaner (such as a mild detergent you use to wash your dishes) warm water and a soft clean toothbrush to remove any leftover dirt. Take extra care to brush the back of the diamond as this will be the area that has collected the most oil and dirt. Be aware that fragile settings and estate jewelry won't take kindly to being scrubbed with a toothbrush, so use a soft touch. Then, just rinse the diamond with water and wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth. Don't use harmful solutions. Chlorine or abrasives should never be used when cleaning diamonds, especially those set in jewelry. These erode some of the metals often used in diamond settings, and may loosen prongs, or even dissolve the metal.

Your ring may occasionally need professional ultrasonic cleaning to remove encrusted dirt. By sending high frequency sound waves through a detergent solution, ultrasonic cleaners cause vibrating fluid to remove accumulated dirt and grime. However, they can also shake loose stones from their mounting, so this method shouldn't be used on fragile settings, and is best undertaken by a professional jeweler. Please pop into Orsini as we have an ultrasonic cleaner and can best advise on cleaning your ring. Regular cleaning will keep your diamond jewellery sparkling for that special occasion. If you want to pop in and see us to get your jewellery regularly cleaned you are most welcome, we also have an effective gentle ionic cleaner that can clean your jewellery in less than 5 minutes.

Don't store your diamond jewellery next to other jewellery pieces as this can cause scratches. A fabric-lined jewelry case with separate compartments is ideal and we can supply you with soft pouches for easy storing of your jewellery. Individual fabric pouches is a perfect way to safely store your jewellery and does not take up too much room if you have a safe.

It is important that you regularly inspect your diamond jewellery to make sure the setting is secure. Ensure you promptly bring it into Orsini if you notice any signs of damage or loosening of the prongs (please ensure you do not wear the ring in case the diamond falls out). We recommend that you have your diamond jewellery examined at least once a year by a jeweller, you are welcome to pop into Orsini Fine Jewellery store.

Most people buy a diamond engagement ring to wear 24 hours a day, however, you should still give thought to its care. Don't wear it when you're doing rough work or going to the gym. Even though a diamond is durable, it can be chipped by a hard blow and the mounts can be scratched and damaged by heavy weights.

Please remember to get your diamond ring insured: Insurance companies will not insure your engagement ring unless it is individually itemized on most insurance policies. We recommend you speak to your insurance company and check your policy, it is heartbreaking if you loose your ring and find out that you are not covered.

Please remember to pop into Orsini at any time to have complimentary professional cleaning of your jewellery. We are also able to get valuations carried out by a qualified valuer.

    General Jewellery Care Guidelines

In order to keep the splendor and beauty of your jewellery it deserves your care. Normal everyday use of cosmetic products, moisture and natural oils in your skin coming into contact with your jewellery may lead to reducing the luster of your gemstones and diamonds, as well as of gold surfaces.

The luster of jewels, especially gold jewels (without gemstones or diamonds) can be maintained easily using specific, non-abrasive products specially meant for cleaning jewellery. We have these products available for you to purchase. These products are safe as long as they are properly applied, though it is advisable to take extra care with products containing ammonia, alcohol, acids or chemical substances that may prove to be too aggressive.

For a number of reasons, the cleaning process may be more risky for jewellery set with gemstones or diamonds; thus, it is advisable to bring these into store for professional cleaning.

Especially when dealing with gemstones of an organic nature (like coral or jet) or with a porous structure (like turquoise, opal and chalcedony), the general rule is to avoid contact with external agents, such as fragrances, creams, sudden changes in temperature, moisture, chlorine, smoke, etc., that may cause irreversible damage.

We recommend that you take the time to place them separately in individual soft and clean sachets or cases, in a dry place safe from harm. Never leave your jewellery jumbled together in a draw, as this could cause chips and scratches to occur. Keep your chains fastened so that they don’t get tangled up. Natural stones do not need any particular treatment or maintenance but, being delicate, they must be properly cared for to avoid knocks that may chip or break them, as well as contact with external agents that may harm them. Please always remember to remove your jewellery if carrying out any activities that may place your jewellery at risk of knocks. For example, house cleaning, washing dishes, sports activities, gardening.

A good rule of thumb would be to avoid contact with cosmetic products, fragrances, soaps, detergents, chlorine or chlorinated water, prolonged exposure to the sun, proximity to heat sources and sudden changes in temperature that may damage the surface of a gemstone irreversibly.

When purchasing white gold please remember that white gold started out as yellow gold. White gold is blended with other white alloys to make it white, because of this the colour isn’t bright white it can have a slight yellow tint. It is standard practice to rhodium plate white gold so that it looks bright white and at its best. This plating will wear off over time. We recommend that you when you bring your ring in for its annual check that you get your white gold ring re rhodium plated, it deserves to look its best.
